Low Frequency Phonics Lessons and Decodable Passages

As teachers we know that in the early grades we must provide practice for our students to read text in order for new words to be learned. One of the hardest things to find is decodable text that contains the spelling patterns being taught that are easy enough for them to read, yet hard and long enough for them to have text reading practice.

We have finished a Low Frequency pack for you!

Included in the download are 12 Low Frequency lessons with a decodable passage:
  • kn
  • mb
  • gn
  • wr
  • mixed kn, mb, gn, wr
  • igh
  • soft c
  • soft g
  • soft c & g
  • y (short i)
  • y (long i)
  • ea (short e)
Using our teacher-ready phonics lesson plans will help your students as they learn to read and will prevent many future reading difficulties. Our lessons follow research on the brain and dyslexia conducted by Shaywitz & Shaywitz (2003) and is made practical in the Teaching Reading Sourcebook by Honig, Diamond, and Gutlohn (2008).

Reach for Reading Grade 2 Phonics Lessons

Click HERE for download and to download a preview.

As teachers we know that in the early grades we must provide practice for our students to read text in order for new words to be learned. The Reach for Reading Read On Your Own Books provide great opportunities for students to read sound-spelling focused text. The books are meant for the kids to read independently (Step 5 of each lesson) after you have provided an explicit phonics lesson on the spelling pattern. We have provided explicit phonics lesson cards to accompany each book.
Download the preview to view the scope and sequence as a PDF or view the image below.
The 32 Read On Your Own Books (not included) have two stories per book. We have written a lesson for each story totaling 64 lessons included in this download. We have also attached video links of phonics lessons as well as other phonics resources. Go here for additional phonics resources.

The Stories Julian Tells Comprehension Guide

The Stories Julian Tells is a great chapter book for 2-3 graders. We have written a comprehension guide to help students learn and practice how to apply metacognative thinking strategies while they read. The comprehension strategies chosen in this guide are: summarize, question, and predict. Use this resource for TIER I guided release instruction, TIER I independent practice, or TIER II intervention with a comprehension focus. In Whitney's 2nd grade class, her high reading groups used this text and lesson as an independent practice which then facilitated discussion in a small reading group. This can be adapted to a variety of comprehension needs.
(Do you use Reach for Reading? This text is included in the 2nd grade Unit 6 small group independent books.)
Download includes (Written for The Stories Julian Tells):
-Reading strategy poster for summarize, question, and predict
-Bookmarks with strategy language for student reference
-Filled in Graphic Organizer for teachers
-Blank Graphic Organizer for students
-Vocabulary for some of the chapters
-After reading discussion questions
-FTAAP Task Analysis graphic organizer (teacher and student copies)
