Meet Angie

I completed my pre-service education in the 90’s when reading instruction was very illusive and followed a wide-swinging pendulum.  I found myself wanting more knowledge about how to teach kids to read before I was ready to take on a classroom of my own.  I ended up beginning a reading endorsement and master’s degree before I went into the classroom.  From this point I have been led by a group of mentors along a path of teaching, coaching, research and learning.  These wonderful mentors and knowledgeable researchers have given me the knowledge needed to help influence schools, teachers, and students in improving reading instruction and thus improving the readers they teach.  Because of their help and examples, I enjoy reading research and interpreting it into teacher-friendly methods and concepts which are successful. 

Helping kids succeed in reading has always been my goal.  I have been able to work doing this in many forums. I spent ten years in public education as a reading specialist, classroom teacher, reading coach, and literacy coach.  I left the public education arena upon finishing my Ph.D. in 2011.  Now I help kids by helping their teachers understand how best to teach so their students can become comprehensive, knowledge-gaining readers.  I thoroughly enjoy teaching pre-service teachers about the knowledge I have gained, and continue to gain, through research, constant reading and teaching. 

Meet Whitney

I am a 2013 graduate of Dixie State University's Elementary Education Program. I had a great experience and learned so many things from the program, one of which was high expectations. During my first year of teaching I found myself having a hard time finding how to teach reading using most current research that I was taught at DSU. I emailed my former professor, Dr. Angie Child, and asked if we could meet me so I could use her plethora of reading knowledge. She was at my side within a couple days and our relationship has only grown. Using reading research, I have made changes in my teaching as well as my team's teaching that we have truly valued and found to be effective.

In 2015, I jokingly (with crossed fingers) threw the idea to Angie that we should start a Teachers Pay Teacher's store. Using her master teacher skills and research knowledge paired with my love of teaching and computer skills we have made that happen! Research is doable in the classroom. I am excited to work with Angie because, with her help, we can help teachers bring research methods into the classroom.
