Free Sound-Spelling Cards

Do you have our Sound-Spelling Poster resource? Watch this video for a sound-spelling refresher.

You might have other sound-spellings that you’re teaching and want a poster to accompany you. Here is an editable card page for you to add the sound-spellings you might need in addition to what we’ve provided. Here you go!

Remember, explicitly teaching the sound-spellings of our language is highly effective. It leads to being able to blend and decode words. Our language is wholly decodable.

Remember, KEEP ONE SOUND with IT’S SPELLING on a card/poster. Think… SOUND-SPELLING, not sounds-spelling.

One question we get often is how to teach consonant blends. Refer to our helpful video – you can jump to 5:15

Happy NEW YEAR, we hope you enjoy and use this free resource!

Phonics Lessons for Reading A-Z Grade K Decodable Books

These explicit phonics lessons are written for Reading A-Z's Grade K decodable books from their major update in 2020. Do you already have our old Reading A-Z lessons?* If so, for a limited time, we have this new file on sale. We've updated the lessons, added a could great new things - including SIGHT WORD CARDS!

Although these decodable books are listed under Grade K according to Reading A-Z, these lessons and decodable books make for fabulous phonics lessons in GRADES K-2 TIER I, TIER II, and TIER III levels of phonics instruction. They would also make for great lessons and text for phonics interventions in grades 3 and beyond. We suggest to align the lessons with your current sound-spelling scope and sequence provided by your district or core reading program.

Note: This download INCLUDES LESSONS and DOES NOT INCLUDE THE DECODABLE TEXT, as those are found at Reading A-Z There is a free trial that allows you to download a limited number of books, check it out! Many principals are more than willing to buy schools or your classroom a subscription as well. It never hurts to ask!

Included in this download:

  • A Scope and Sequence of Reading A-Z's Grade K decodable books
  • Lots of teacher helps, PD, and tips!
  • 33 CVC Lesson Cards (short a, e, i, o, u, and short vowel mix)
  • 3 Consonant Blend Lesson Cards (s, r, l blends)
  • 4 vCe Lesson Cards ( a_e, i_e, o_e, u_e)
  • 5 Consonant Digraph Lesson Cards (sh, ch, wh, th, ph)
  • Printable Sight Words Cards for ALL 45 Lessons - NEW!!
  • File folder labels for each lesson - Formatted to print on Avery File Folder Labels
  • Links to helpful Youtube Videos from us!

*Many of these lessons are an update from our older download of the old Reading A-Z scope and sequence. However, we've added a couple new things to the lesson cards, have provided sight word cards, updated the new text numbers to align with Reading A-Z, added the new lessons, etc.... See our old download, but it is out of date. Reading A-Z made quite the change in their K, 1, 2 decodable books and text! We are excited for the many new books & text they have over their K-2 scope and sequence.

If you missed our video about WHAT the Sound-Spelling patterns are and
WHY we teach them, check out this video...

Breaking the English language into the most common spelling patterns is an effective way to teach the connection of the sounds and the spellings to children while learning to read.  This relationship between the sounds and the spellings of language is also called decoding.  Decoding our language is critical to being an adept reader.  Breaking the English language into the most common spelling patterns and teaching them explicitly in a clear scope and sequence is recommended.  You can follow our pattern or break this up to follow your Core Reading Program's scope and sequence.

In our Sound-Spelling Posters and Reference Sheets, we include the spelling patterns:

What and Why of Sound-Spelling Patterns

Today's video is all about the English language!
What are sound-spelling patterns and why do we teach them?

The English language is a phonetically based language.  It includes many words (50% wholly decodable and additional 37% within one sound) that are decodable.  That is great news for those of us teaching kids to learn to read!  This means we have a fairly reliable code we can teach them to use.  This code is made up of spellings that link to sounds and these blend together to form the words in our language.  We call the key to this code sound-spelling patterns.  We as teachers must teach these sound-spelling patterns to our students, and teach them to be flexible in their use of those sound-spelling patterns (to account for the "within one sound" parts).

We cover more information about what and why we need to teach these sound-spelling patterns in our classrooms, yes, even upper grades!  Big words are all made of sound-spelling patterns too!

We have an awesome resource for you to help you teach the sound-spelling patterns.
Check it out HERE!

What grades are our "beginner" phonics lessons for?

Whether you teach Kindergarten, First grade or need these beginner lessons for Intervention in Second grade, these lessons can help save you time and effort and keep your students engaged in their learning!

What will you receive in the download of the digital phonics lessons?

In each download, you'll received a PDF with the lessons, student text, and dictation sheet. In the PDF you purchase, you will be given a link to the digital lessons through Google Slides. You can run the digital lessons through your computer or any device that can download Google Slides app! Don't forget to watch our video to see how they work!  If technology goes down, have no fear! You can use the printable lesson card and student text to teach any lesson without technology.

We have taken the time to include all the important components of an effective phonics lesson in every lesson with some animations and cool features:
  1. phonemic awareness warm-up
  2. sound-spelling review
  3. blending words
  4. sight word review
  5. text reading
  6. word work through dictation
These beginning lessons start with the most basic sound-spelling patterns, short vowels, and build until all the vowels have been taught.  We then add consonant blends, giving more blending practice with larger words and mixed short vowels.

These lessons give you engaging and motivating classroom practice in all of the components of the lessons, ending with the most important thing, text reading!

Download our FREE sample today to check it out!

Don't forget to watch the video so you don't miss a beat when you download the files!  A review of the sound-spelling patterns might be useful also, we have a resource for those, too.

What, Why, and When of Beginner Phonics Lessons

New YouTube Video!

Throughout the early grades there are a few major components that are critical when learning to read: phonemic awareness, the alphabetic principle, and text reading. When these components are linked together, taught explicitly, applied to word blending and text reading, they create powerful weapons in the fight against illiteracy! In this short video, we discuss the importance of these components in the early grades, and provide some understanding that is necessary for explicit phonics instruction to young children.

FREEBIE! Binder Labels for Phonics

Do you need help organizing your phonics resources? I (Whitney) organize my resources in two ways.

1. FILE FOLDERS.

I use hanging file folders that align to my reading program that are organized by unit and week. The file folders contain my reading program's lessons and text for the week.

2. PHONICS BINDERS.

I love organizing supplemental phonics lessons and decodable text in binders. This allows me to pull other text when needed for Tier I and/or Tier II instruction. Because they are organized by the sound-spellings, it makes it easier to find what I need rather than having to remember what unit/week it was taught.

In my binders I keep any old reading program phonics lessons and decodable text I have saved, lessons and passages Angie and I have written, or any other decodable text resource I can find. Reading A-Z is a favorite.

I cleaned and reorganized my binders this past year, so I thought I would share my labels. Enjoy!
